Nepali gov’t pay attention to floods in southeast area

Kathmandu : Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal known as “Prachanda” on Monday said that the government is serious about the problems caused by the Saptakoshi floods.

At a meeting with the representatives of the Morang Commerce and Industries Association on Monday morning, Prachanda said the government has been carrying out serious discussions with the Indian government in this regard, local news website eKantipur reported.

Quoting the prime minister, industrialist and Constituent Assembly (CA) member Moti Dugad said that the Indian government has been requested to provide an alternative route to the East-West Highway that has been obstructed when certain sectors of it have been swept away by the devastating Saptakoshi floods.

The prime minister assured the representatives that an immediate and a long-term arrangement will be made to ferry the products and travelers across the Saptakoshi River for the relief to the local industries and people.

Earlier, the industrialists told the prime minister about the problems they have been facing in transporting their products in the market since two weeks ago because of the floods and the highway blockage.

Some Village Development Committees (VDCs) were in full or partial inundation in Sunsari and Saptari districts bordering India, some 220 km southeast of capital Kathmandu, after the embankment of the Saptakoshi River suddenly broke down on Aug. 18.The population affected by the flood has risen to 5,000, according to local media.
