Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court Tuesday asked the state government to respond to detailed proposals from the rights group Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) to compensate victims of the communal violence of 2002.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice M.S. Shah and Justice D.H. Waghela was hearing a plea by CJP for compensation to the violence victims – the dead, the injured and women who were sexually abused whose names are not included in the list for compensation prepared by the state government.
The court asked the state government to respond to CJP’s scheme and scheduled further hearing Sep 23.
It accepted on record the details given by the organisation based on an extensive survey carried out over the years, according to a statement here from CJP secretary Teesta Setalvad.
It said that till date, 18,000 households that suffered during riots have not received compensation.
The proposed scheme seeks compensation of Rs.500,000 in case of death in police firing and for those declared missing.
CJP has also suggested compensation for destroyed homes, for sexually abused women and dargahs and mosques destroyed. It suggested that 8,700 ‘internally displaced persons’ should be given rehabilitation cards and relief camp land should be regularised.
The court had in 2003 asked CJP to monitor the disbursal of compensation.
