German Green Party slams NSG approval for disputed US-Indian atomic deal

By IRNA,

Berlin : The head of Germany’s opposition Green Party, Claudia Roth on Saturday lashed out at the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) for approving the controversial US-India nuclear accord following three days of talks in Vienna.

“Under German chairmanship (of the NSG), India will be rewarded for its atomic rearming. This is a fatal signal for atomic rearmament and a wrecking of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT),” Roth said in a statement in Berlin.

She accused the German government of “torpedoing a responsible disarmament policy.”
The world has become even less safe, Roth made clear.

The US arm-twisted nuclear-exporting countries to give green light for trade with India after reaching consensus on an export waiver for the Asian powerhouse.

India will now be able to access global nuclear markets for its rapidly widening atomic energy programme, despite the fact that it has not signed the NPT.

Critics of the US-India nuclear agreement have warned New Delhi could misuse the import of foreign atomic technology to expand its own arsenal of atomic weapons.
