Smuggler shot, Rs.40 mn worth of heroin seized at border

Chandigarh : An Indian drug smuggler was shot and his accomplice arrested at the India-Pakistan border in Amritsar district, a senior Border Security Force (BSF) official said Sunday. Four kilogram of heroin worth Rs.40 million in the international market was seized from them.

“At about 1.30 a.m. Sunday, a BSF sentry spotted two Indians in Raja Tal village in Punjab’s Amritsar district along the international border. They were trying to make a deal with three other drug peddlers who were on Pakistan’s side of the border,” Mohammad Akil, Deputy Inspector general (DIG) of BSF, told media persons in Amritsar Sunday.

“When our official challenged them, one of the Indian accused, Sonu who was carrying a sword, attacked him. In retaliation, our official fired at them,” Akil said.

“Sonu died on the spot and the other Indian accused was arrested while the Pakistani smugglers managed to escape,” he added.

“The BSF has seized four packets containing one kilogram of heroin each. Nine empty cartridges and four live cartridges have also been recovered from the spot,” Akil added.

The drugs is worth Rs.40 million in the international market, said a senior BSF official.
