New Delhi : Gujjar leader and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Delhi unit president Ramvir Singh Bidhuri Tuesday announced his resignation from the party and said two Municipal Corporation of Delhi councillors also would quit the party.
“I have taken this decision to start a nationwide agitation against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” said Bidhuri at a press conference Tuesday.
Bidhuri announced that Mahesh Awana and Mamta Sharma, two MCD councillors of the NCP, have also decided to resign.
Bidhuri, MLA from Badarpur, has sent his resignation to NCP national chief Sharad Pawar. Mahesh Awana and Mamta Sharma are MCD councillors respectively from Mithapur and Jaitpur.
Bidhuri was holding several key posts in the NCP. He was member of the NCP working committee and also president of the party NCP’s north India division.
Bidhuri said, “It is now required to attack the BJP for targetting the Gujjar community in Rajasthan and Jammu.”
“Gujjars helped the army in Jammu and Kashmir but were targeted during the recent violence in the state. Even the Rajasthan government has deceived Gujjars by not giving them Scheduled Tribes status and not taking back false cases against Gujjar protesters,” Bidhuri added.
Asked the reason behind his resignation, Bidhuri told IANS: “I am taking the decision so that secular votes don’t get divided.”
He declined to say which party he would join. “I will announce my future steps after a week but cannot reveal anything at present.”
However, sources said Bidhuri might float a new political outfit focusing on the Gujjar community in the capital and others from the NCP may join him.
“He is planning a meeting next week with the leaders of the Gujjar Mahasangh, which had worked for reservations for Gujjars in Rajasthan. Gujjar leaders of several states may join in the meeting and only after that a decision would be taken,” sources added.
