New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday extended the central government’s ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) till the second week of October.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam allowed the continued ban on SIMI by extending the operation of its Aug 5 interim order, which suspended an earlier tribunal order that overturned the government’s ban on the outfit.
The bench extended the temporary ban on SIMI while postponing the slated Sep 24 hearing on a lawsuit by the union government challenging the verdict of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, which had scrapped the ban on Aug 5.
The bench postponed the hearing on a plea by counsel Kamini Jaiswal for former SIMI president Bashir Badra, who wanted more time to file his reply on the government’s lawsuit challenging the tribunal’s verdict.
The bench has slated it tentatively for hearing to the second week of October.
On the government’s suit, the apex court on Aug 6 imposed an interim ban on the SIMI till Aug 20. On Aug 6 it was further extended to Sep 24.
