New Delhi : The ruling Congress was once again under severe attack from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the capital’s water and energy problems on the second day of the Delhi legislative assembly’s monsoon session Thursday.
The opposition tried to corner the government on the insufficient water supply in several parts of the capital, with the BJP nearly ensuring that the entire question hour was devoted to the issue.
The BJP repeatedly alleged that the government has neglected the issue.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who also heads the Delhi Jal Board, agreed that there was a water shortage in Delhi and also a problem with the distribution system. She said that three underground water reservoirs would be commissioned in west Delhi by the end of the year and that this would ease the problem somewhat.
Meanwhile, Delhi Power Minister A.K. Walia, who had come under attack sharp attack from the BJP in assembly Wednesday, once again faced its ire Thursday on the poor energy situation in the city.
Walia Thursday rapped Delhi’s power distribution companies and asked them to increase supplies at earliest.
“The government is doing everything possible to ensure that no area in capital faces power cuts,” Walia said, adding he had told the distribution companies to refrain from load shedding and that any complacency would invite strict action from the government.
Walia said they would take strict action against officials if complaints of negligence and inflated bills were found to be true.
