Puri : A beach in Orissa Thursday came alive to replicas of the twin towers of New York that fell to terror attacks seven years ago, with renowned sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik paying a tribute to 9/11 victims.
Patnaik in his home city of Puri recreated the twin towers with the help of his students using about five tonnes of sand. “Hundreds of people and tourists visited the sculpture and paid tribute,” Patnaik told IANS.
The terror attacks on Sep 11, 2001, at the World Trade Centre in New York and other places in the US killed more than 2,700 people.
Sand artist Patnaik is known to take inspiration from current events. He has participated in more than 37 international sand sculpture events and this year he has become the first Indian to win a world championship in Berlin for his sculpture on global warming.
Patnaik, who figured in the Limca Book of Records in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions for his work, will also find place in the 2009 edition for winning the United Sand Festivals (USF) World Double Championship held June 5.
