Arrest politicians, clerics defending Abu Bashar, demands BJP

By IANS,

Lucknow : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday demanded that the politicians and clerics who visited Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district house of Abu Bashar, alleged to be the mastermind behind the Gujarat serial bombings in July, should be arrested.

The BJP leaders handed over a memorandum to Governor T.V. Rajeswar in this regard.

Led by senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon, a five-member team of the party appealed to the governor that police cases must be registered against the politicians and Muslim clerics who have stepped out in Bashar’s defence.

Clerics led by the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Maulana Ahmed Bukhari, alongwith Samajwadi Party MP Abu Azmi, and Congress party leader Ram Naresh, among others, met Bashar’s family members Aug 21.

They termed the arrest of Bashar as “anti-Muslim” policies of the Indian investigating agencies and charged the government with “undue harassment of Muslims”.

Bashar was arrested Aug 16 jointly by the Gujarat and the Uttar Pradesh police forces.
