Afghan governor killed in bomb attack

By Xinhua,

Kabul : Governor of southern Afghanistan’s Logar province and his three bodyguards were killed Saturday when a remote controlled bomb hit his bulletproof vehicle on the outskirts of the capital, the police said.

“The governor of Logar, Abdullah Wardak, was coming out from his residence in Paghman, 20 km west of Kabul, when a remote-controlled bomb struck his car, killing him and his three bodyguards this morning,” provincial police chief Mustafa Mohsini told reporters.

He blamed the attack on “the enemies of Afghanistan” – a term used for the Taliban militants.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility by the Taliban whose fighters often carry out such attacks and target Afghan government interests.

Logar, 60 km south of Kabul, has been the scene of militant activities for the past one year as the insurgents shot dead three foreign aid workers in the province last month.

Spiralling insurgency and Taliban-linked violence have left around 4,000 people dead, mostly insurgents, till date this year.
