Kalam for stringent anti-terror laws

Ahmedabad, Sep 14 (IANS) Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has called for setting up a unified intelligence agency that would include citizens in the fight against terrorism and stringent laws that deliver faster justice.

“There should be a national mission to eradicate terrorism. Terrorists operate from within society, they live in homes and hotels, so if people are involved in the fight against terror they will be thwarted,” Kalam said here Saturday.

Kalam, who was in Ahmedabad to deliver a lecture on ‘Globalising and Resurgent India through Innovative Transformation (GRIT)’ in the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), said there was need for a national citizen’s identity code to keep a tab on terror.

“We need to enact stringent laws which deliver faster justice,” he said.

A series of 20-odd bombings had ripped through Gujarat’s main city of Ahmedabad July 26, killing 56 people. Subsequently, at least 25 bombs were recovered in Surat.

Kalam’s comments came after five bombings in New Delhi claimed 21 lives.
