Dubai : In what must be perhaps the first of its kind in the fashion world, three young Saudi girls are organising a fashion show solely focused on veiled women.
Luma Al-Ghalib, Hida Al-Harthi and Lujain Al-Mu’allami are organising the show in Jeddah Sep 18 to demonstrate the greatness of Islam and “to erase the stereotyped image about Saudi women and young girls in particular”, the Saudi Gazette newspaper reported.
The idea for the show came after the three participated in a summer camp in Switzerland last year.
Girls of other nationalities asked them about their simple and decent dresses.
The three Saudi girls then explained to participants in the camp what the veil or Hijab meant for Muslim women and how they wore it.
On returning home, they shared their experience with friends and the whole thing started to take shape.
With friends and relatives encouraging them, they started making veils with different head cover designs.
They then started selling these to retail shops.
“To our surprise shop owners called us ordering more head covers and caps,” Luma, 19, was quoted as saying.
“Thus, the idea of organizing a show emerged,” she said.
According to Luma, Saudi women and expatriate residents, especially non-Muslims, will be invited to the show so as to acquaint them with Islamic traditions.
The organizers hope to generate 150,000 Saudi riyals ($39,997) from the show, part of which they say they would donate to Quran memorization societies in Saudi Arabia.
