Congress has betrayed Samajwadi Party: Amar Singh

By IANS,

New Delhi : Strains began to show in their newly-formed alliance as Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh Tuesday accused the Congress of poaching on party legislators in Madhya Pradesh.

Saying that the Congress had “broken his heart” by poaching the four legislators, Amar Singh alleged that the defection had been engineered by Congress leader Digvijay Singh.

“The Congress party betrayed us by engineering (the) defection of our party. They have not only broken my party, but also my heart,” Amar Singh said.

He, however, said he had no complaints against COngress chief Sonia Gandhi or her son Rahul Gandhi, “but leaders of Madhya Pradesh roaming around them have cheated us”.

He said he would abide by the commitment his party had made with Sonia Gandhi for cooperation with the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Digvijay Singh dismissed the allegation that the Congress was responsible for the defections.

“The Congress has not done anything. These lawmakers resigned from the party. I have not engineered the defection. I have nothing to do with it.”

This is not the first time that cracks have appeared in the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance. They are already locked in a row over seat-sharing for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The Samajwadi Party joined hands with the Congress to bail out the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government during the crucial July 22 trust vote over the India-US nuclear deal.
