Maharashtra: While both Central and state governments are in favour of extending the ban on SIMI, the Maharashtra government has filed in the Supreme Court an affidavit which says that out of 194 cases against SIMI there, charges could be proved in just 2.
The Anti-Terrorism Squad, Intelligence agencies and the police may hold SIMI responsible for the terror attacks in the country but what remains the fact till date is that the police have been unable to prove charges in most of the cases against the “activists” of the banned organization.
This is clear from the statement submitted by the state government in the Supreme Court to advocate the continuance of the ban on it.
Not only Maharashtra but many other states have filed their statements in the apex court pointing out how SIMI has been involved in the anti-national and terrorist activities in the country.
In its statement submitted with the apex court, the Maharashtra government said that in total 194 cases have been registered against 1057 activists of the group, says a report in the Urdu daily Inquilab.
But the state police have proved charges only in two cases involving 10 activists of the extremist organization, whereas in different 54 cases 246 SIMI activists have been released on account of lack of evidence.
Moreover, in six cases the court has discharged 79 activists of the extremist group.
Apart from this, 111 cases involving 693 SIMI activists are pending before the court.
Many efforts to contact Anami Narayan Rai, Director General of Police of Maharashtra, to talk on the issue failed.
