Colombo : At least 27 Tamil Tiger guerrillas were killed in fighting in northern Sri Lanka Saturday, military officials said Sunday.
Government troops killed nine rebels each in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Welioya regions, officials said.
The government also said that troops were on the verge of evicting fighters from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from their last strongholds in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts.
The military has gained an upper hand in the island’s separatist conflict since mid-2006 by dealing a series of blows to the LTTE.
