Hyderabad : At least two students were killed and 35 others were injured when the parapet wall of a college building in Hyderabad outskirts collapsed on Saturday afternoon, the police said. Injured students including two in serious conditions have been rushed to the nearby Kamineni hospital.

One of the victims has been identified as Lokeshwara Reddy of Mahbubnagar district.

Cyberabad police commissioner R Prabhakar Reddy said that the incident occurred at Changicharla village near Uppal, 20 kms away from Hyderabad city at the Narayan Junior College campus. Students were injured as the rubble of the parapet wall of the third floor fell on them on the ground. Under the impact of the collapse of the wall, at least two students fell in to a sceptic tank killing them on the spot. Some students who were standing with their back to the wall fell along with the rubble from the third floor. Many of them suffered fractures in hands and legs.

As the news of the wall collapse spread, panic stricken parents and relatives of the parents gathered at the campus. While some of them were worried about the safety of their wards, others went on a protest shouting slogans against the “carelessness” of the management. They damaged the furniture of the college and broke glass panes. They also staged a sit in protest demanding the arrest of the management.

Some students alleged that they had drawn the attention of the management that the parapet wall was weak and it can collapse any time but they did not take any action.

The college cum hostel campus was set up recently and it has newly constructed buildings. “apparently the fault in construction led to the accident”, a police official said.

The Chief Minister Y S Rajasehara Reddy has expressed deep shock over the incident and directed the officials to take stern action against those found guilty.
