Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reasserted its commitment to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash, in a statement, said the UAE is among the countries which are at the forefront in the region to implement several measures to ban the spread of WMD, the official Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.
His comments came ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York this week.
Gargash said among the measures taken by the UAE in this regard are the establishment of a task force to block the spread of WMD in the country. A UAE interior ministry ordinance ensures that the country doesn’t become a party to the spread of WMD and has also introduced regulations on the import, export and re-export of dual-use commodities.
Several local and federal authorities in the UAE like customs and free zones work to ensure proper implementation of international laws for banning the spread of WMD. “These authorities have set up meticulous mechanisms for proper investigation and scrutiny of goods with the help of competent personnel who are well trained in the field of non-proliferation of WMD,” he said.
“This keenness stems out of the country’s responsibility towards the international community in this regard, as well as its commitment to the implementation of related international conventions,” Gargash added.
