23 people rescued from Himachal’s cold desert

Manali : At least 23 people, including a Japanese tourist, were Tuesday rescued from snow-bound Battal near the Kunzum Pass and Lossar areas of Himachal Pradesh, an official said.

“The rescued persons were taken to Kaza town,” Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner C. Palrasu told IANS.

“Due to inclement weather, an Indian Air Force chopper could not drop eatables and blankets,” he said.

More than 200 people are still struggling for survival on various locations between world’s highest motorable road Baralacha pass, Bharatpur and Sarchu.

Meanwhile, the Manali-Leh National Highway remained closed as the upper reaches were receiving fresh snowfall while mid-hills were having heavy to moderate rain since Monday.

The Kunzum Pass is the link between Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts. This route is being followed these days as the national highway between Shimla and Kinnaur was badly damaged due to heavy rain.
