CYG youth baton relay arrives in Nagpur

Nagpur : The spectacular Youth Baton Relay in the run up to the Pune Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 that begins Oct 12 entered the city Tuesday evening after traversing six states since its launch from Delhi Aug 1.

The baton relay, with an 80-member crew including 40 runners, was earlier welcomed at Butibori village, 25 km from the city. Village council chief Samir Jaiswal welcomed the rally at the Dutta Vidya Mandir in the presence of Public Undertakings Minister Anil Deshmukh and other dignitaries.

A series of events await the CYG runners in the city Wednesday, including a felicitation at the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College and a cultural programme at the Nagpur University convocation hall.

The baton bearers, who are also carrying a “Save the Tiger” message, will witness a painting exhibition on the subject by school students.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Vilas Muttemwar, Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Darda and Bharatiya Janata Party state unit president Nitin Gadkari will grace the events, besides CYG organizing committee chief Suresh Kalmadi.

The baton relay is slated to reach Pune on the eve of the CYG inauguration Oct 12.
