Forward Bloc leader Biswas quits Rajya Sabha seat

By IANS,

New Delhi : Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas Tuesday quit his Rajya Sabha membership in keeping with the party’s “one man one post” policy.

He submitted his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari here.

The party’s central secretariat member Varun Mukherjee will be the nominee to the upper house, Biswas told IANS.

Biswas had been the Forward Bloc representative in the upper house for three separate terms. He announced his decision to quit Sep 19, after the party’s two-day central secretariat meeting in Kolkata.

Biswas, who was elected as Rajya Sabha MP in April from the West Bengal assembly, said he resigned in keeping with the party decision of “one man one post”.

“The 2006 party congress had decided on separate functioning of the party organisation and the parliamentary party. Those who are holding two key posts should quit one post. I have decided this should be implemented at the top level,” Biswas said.
