New Delhi: To show solidarity with its students arrested after the Batla House shootout in connection with the Delhi bombing, and to condemn media bashing of Jamia and the Muslim community, the Jamia Millia Islamia held a massive Peace March in its vicinity today.
Led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Mushirul Hasan, thousands of students, teachers, faculties, staff and parents took to the street in a peaceful manner. Some of them were holding national flag to show they are pure Indian and branding them as terrorist without any evidence will not do good to the country.
Many students were holding placards. Some of them read: “Terrorism has no religion,” “Islam is against terrorism,” “We have books not AK-47” and “Secularism, Non-violence, Nationalism are Legacy of Jamia.”
The massive rally, which began its journey from the Engineering Faculty Auditorium and ended at the Administration Block, remained peaceful all the way.
In the September 19 Jamia Nagar encounter, one of the slain suspected terrorists was Jamia student. In the days after the encounter, several people were picked up by the Delhi Police Special Cell from the Jamia Nagar area. Two of them have turned out to be Jamia students.
The way these people were picked up from their homes and later branded as hardcore terrorists, had sent a chilling wave through the nerves of the students. They were shocked and terrified until yesterday when VC Prof. Hasan addressed them and tried to instill confidence in them. He also assured the families of the students picked that the university will provide them legal aid.
