New York : United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) Ban Ki-moon is expected to arrive in Dhaka on November 1 on a two-day visit to Bangladesh.
It was informed when Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed on Friday met him at his office in the UN headquarters here.
After the meeting, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim told reporters that Ban Ki-moon warmly welcomed Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed and the members of his delegation at his office.
Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim, Permanent Representative to UN Ismat Jahan were present.
Appreciating the intervening speech of Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed on Africa’s development need, the Ban Ki-moon said it was comprehensive and covered almost all major issues of Africa.
He also commended the Chief Adviser for raising voice on climate change issue that will affect many countries including Bangladesh.
Lauding the role of Bangladesh Armed Forces in the UN peacekeeping missions across the world including African countries, Ban Ki-moon said the United Nations will request Bangladesh to take leadership role in the International Stabilizing Force to be formed for establishing peace in Somalia.
The Chief Adviser thanked the UNSG for selecting Bangladesh for this important position.
Besides, the issue of climate change and implementation of millenium development goals (MDGs) will get importance during Ban Ki-moon’s visit to Dhaka.
Welcoming the visit of Ban Ki-moon in Bangladesh, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said the country is eagerly waiting for this visit and hoped it will bring immense benefit for Bangladesh.
Despite two floods and cyclone Sidr, the resilient people of Bangladesh faced the challenge successfully and Bangladesh witnessed a bumper production of rice, potato and other seasonal crops.
But the success stories of Bangladesh are not well-heard, he
added.
The Chief Adviser said implementation of MDGs are going on smoothly and rests could also be achieved if international community continue its support.
Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed said the preparation of holding general elections in December is at the final stage and voters list with photographs has been prepared.
Ban Ki-moon appreciated the leadership of Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed implementation of reforms and going ahead to hold elections in time.
