No dynastic rule in Congress, says Rahul Gandhi

By IANS,

Kochi (Kerala): Brushing aside talk of his becoming the prime minister, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Monday said his aim was to strengthen the youth brigade of the Congress party.

“Dynastic rule in the Congress party is not going to be there,” Rahul Gandhi said.

He was responding to question by reporters on the statement by his sister Priyanka Gandhi that he has the qualities to become the prime minister.

“I know my sister very well. We have good relations. I don’t think she would have made that statement. Maybe she would have said I am capable. I have not spoken to her after her statement was reported,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters here while addressing his first press conference in the state.

He continued, “Everyone says there is dynastic rule in the Congress party.”

“First you said Sonia Gandhi would be the prime minister, but she did not, instead Manmohan Singh became. Now you say I will become. But my priorities are different. My aim is to try to develop a system for the youth. In three to five years’ time, the NSUI (National Students Union of India) and Youth Congress will be strengthened. You wait and see I will produce youth leaders in hundreds.”

Asked about his marriage plans, the 38-year-old MP said, “Right now I am too busy with elections. Marriage will have to wait.”
