5,300 Tamil Nadu polling booths ‘sensitive’: police

By IANS,

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu): At least 5,300 polling booths in Tamil Nadu have been identified as “sensitive” from a security point of view, state police chief said Tuesday.

Director General of Police K.P. Jain said the police department was geared to handle any eventuality during the Lok Sabha elections in the state which goes to polls in the last of the five-phase voting May 13.

“Since 10 percent of the 53,000 polling booths have been identified as sensitive, a special three-tier security will be in place on polling day in these potential problem areas during delivery and collection of EVMs and also at counting centres,” Jain told reporters here.

“Over and above the existing 100,000 strong force of 94 companies of central paramilitary forces, 21,000 ex-servicemen, home guards, forest department officials and former policemen have been requisitioned,” Jain said.

Jain reviewed security arrangements in this communally sensitive textile city situated 500 km southwest of state capital Chennai.
