Engineering student commits suicide after harassment by senior

Ghaziabad : A search has been launched for a former student of the Indraprastha Engineering College, who allegedly drove a fourth-year student to suicide through continuous harassment, police said Thursday.

A criminal case was filed against the former student, identified as Abhishek, after a note charging him with driving Sarika, a fourth-year student of B.Tech in Electronic and Communication Engineering, to commit suicide Wednesday night was found next to the girl’s body.

“We have registered a criminal case under section 306 of IPC (abetment to commit suicide) against Abhishek. Our next job is to arrest him. We have sent teams to Kanpur to conduct raids on his hideouts,” superintendent of police (City) Anant Deo said.

According to police, Sarika (23) was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room on the third floor of the girls hostel inside the college late Wednesday night. Her uncle had come to visit her and both he and the hostel guard were unable to get a response, the guard scaled the rear wall and peered into the room to find the girl hanging from the ceiling.

The police were called and took custody of the body. They also found a note by Sarika in which she said it was Abhishek, who had passed out of the college and was looking for a job, who used to harass her, calling her on phone and sending obscene text messages. Finding no other way to protect her dignity, she was forced to commit suicide and Abhishek was solely responsible for her act, she had written in the note, according to a police official.

Sarika had lodged several complaints against Abhishek with the hostel warden but to no avail. Her father Suresh Chand, a trader from Kanpur, who had reached Ghaziabad to collect his daughter’s body, told IANS that the environment in the college was not conducive for girls.
