New Delhi : A city court Monday convicted Abdul Karim Telgi, the brain behind the multi-billion fake stamp paper scam, and six others accused in a fake stamp paper case in the capital.
Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sanjay Bansal convicted the seven after they pleaded guilty before him through teleconferencing from Bangalore. Telgi and 13 others were accused in the case registered in 2001 following the recovery of fake stamp papers worth millions of rupees in the capital.
Telgi and the others were charged with sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 250 (delivery of coin, possessed with knowledge that it is altered), 259 (having possession of counterfeit government stamp), 260 (using as genuine a government stamp known to be a counterfeit), 420 (cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the Indian Penal Code.
The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on April 23.
A special sessions court in Bangalore Friday sentenced Telgi to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.125,000. The seven co-accused were also sentenced to jail for seven years.
