Supreme Court to hear lawsuit on funds stashed abroad

New Delhi : The Supreme Court will Wednesday hear a lawsuit asking the the government to explain what steps were being taken to bring back over Rs.70 lakh crore (Rs.7 trillion) of Indian black money alleged to be stashed in foreign banks all over the world.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan Tuesday decided to urgently hear the lawsuit after senior counsel Anil B. Divan told the bench that a lawsuit for bringing back Indian money from foreign banks had been filed in the apex court registry.

Divan pleaded for urgent hearing of the matter.

The lawsuit has been filed by former law minister Ram Jethmalani, former Punjab police chief K.P.S. Gill and some other former bureaucrats.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has alleged during this poll season that billions of rupees in Indian slush funds have been stashed abroad and could be used for terrorism.
