We will not support Congress-led government: Karat

New Delhi : The Left parties will not prop up a Congress-led government, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat reiterated Wednesday.

Though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh two days ago hinted at tying up with them after polls, Karat said the Left parties would prefer to sit in opposition in case the Third Front fails to form the government.

“We will prefer to sit in opposition. We are not going to prop up a Congress-led government,” said the communist leader.

Karat had led the Left parties to withdraw their support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government over the India-US civil nuclear deal.

Accusing the Congress of pursuing anti-people policies, Karat said he did not believe the Congress-led UPA would get a second chance to form the government.

In an interview to the Times Now news channel, Karat also refuted the prime minister’s statement that the Left parties were trying to divide the secular votes.

“We think, there is an increasing space for the non-Congress, non-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) forces in the country. As far as the secular vote is concerned, we have actually prevented the BJP from forging alliances,” Karat said.
