New Delhi : Kanwar Sain and Azad Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were Thursday elected as the mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, of the national capital.
Sain received 182 votes and his opponent Darshana Jatav of the Congress got 73 out of 263 votes cast in the poll.
Sain replaces his party colleague Aarti Mehra for the post. As per the rules, each year a new mayor is selected by the city’s councillors.
The first year, the post is reserved for a woman candidate and in the second year a person from the general category is elected. For the third year, the post is reserved for a person from the Schedule Castes. Sain was elected in the reserved category.
For deputy mayor’s post, BJP’s Singh defeated Amrit Lal Singhal of the Congress after Sanjay Gupta of the Bahujan Samaj Party withdrew his nomination.
