The 18 people held in Chennai and seven in Thanjavur district, 300 km south of here, belonged to various Indian Tamil extremist factions associated with Tamil nationalist leader P. Nedumaran, a police spokesperson said.

They tried to burn the national flag in the precincts of the Shastri Bhavan here that houses major central government establishments and outside smaller central government offices in Thanjavur, the spokesperson added.

The travails of innocent Tamil civilians trapped in war-torn northern Sri Lanka is an emotional issue in Tamil Nadu and the neighbouring union territory of Puducherry.
