I am a doer like my father: Varun Gandhi

By IANS,

Lucknow : Bhartiya Janata Party’s Varun Gandhi Monday said people liked him because he was a doer like his father, the late Sanjay Gandhi, and promised to develop Uttar Pradesh after Mayawati’s term was over.

Speaking at an election rally in Asiana locality here, Varun Gandhi said, “People love me because they say I am like my father – ‘Jo kehta hai, woh karta hai’ (He does what he says). And I promise that the state will develop after three years”, referring to the three years left of the Mayawati government.

The BJP’s candidate from Pilibhit said the Congress was breathing its last and that he won’t castigate the ruling party.

“I will not use any bad words for the Congress. ‘Meri maan ne kaha hai ki jo apni antim saanse gin raha ho, uske baare me galat tippani nahi karni chahiye (My mother has said one should not comment wrongly against anybody who is breathing his last),” he said.

Varun Gandhi said he had not plunged into politics for money or fame. “I am not happy with the present situation of the country, and the tarnished image our politicians have donned with their wrong doings,” he said.

He said the ongoing Lok Sabha polls were an issue of patriotism. “It is not a matter of Varun winning or the BJP winning. We need to save the patriotism that is inherited by each and every countrymen. If this (patriotism) dies, the country will become orphan.”

“I am not against any religion or caste, but I am against those who are spreading hatred and terrorism in the country,” he added.

“If I had a Singh, Chaudhary, Patel or Dixit surname instead of Gandhi, I could have taken another 50 years to get a ticket. This shows that the youths interested to serve the country are not getting a chance because they belong to a very common and simple family,” Varun Gandh said.

He attacked Chief Minister Mayawati and said Uttar Pradesh was one of the poorest and most backward states in the country.

Varun Gandhi was canvassing support for Ranjan Kumar Chaudhary, the BJP candidate from Mohanlalganj in Uttar Pradesh.
