Kalyan Singh in trouble over casteist speech

By IANS,

Agra : District authorities Thursday moved against former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel Kalyan Singh for his objectionable casteist utterances.

While addressing a roadside election meeting Wednesday afternoon in Agra, Kalyan Singh criticised the upper castes, particularly the Brahmins, for “surrendering their dignity and self respect before those sections who till the other day would not even dare raise their heads or take out barats (wedding processions) in the villages”. His provocative speech had left people shocked.

After deliberations, the district administration Thursday evening directed the Taj Ganj police station to file a First Information Report (FIR) under the Representation of People’s Act against Kalyan Singh. Taj Ganj police said a notice would be sent to Kalyan Singh whose speech has been video-recorded.

An FIR was also registered against veteran actress Hema Malini at the Kagaraul police station on Thursday.

Hema Malini had allegedly asked for support and votes from Jats of the area on behalf of her Jat husband Dharmendra at an election meeting last week in the Fatehpur Sikri area.
