President, Prime Minister condole Shihab Thangal’s death

New Delhi: The President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh have condoled the passing away of Panakkad Syed Muhammedali Shihab Thangal, Kerala state president of Muslim League.

In a condolence message to Thangal’s wife Aysha Bibi, the President has said ‘Shri Thangal was a prominent social worker who took active interest in accelerating social- economic development. In his death, the nation has lost an eminent public figure’.

In his message the PM said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Panakkad Sayyid Muhammad Ali Shihab Thangal. He was one of Kerala’s most prominent leaders and led the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for many decades with great distinction. He was a nationalist who cherished secular values; and a social worker and a powerful orator. Janab Thangal was a religious scholar with strong academic credentials and will be remembered as a leader who championed the propagation and importance of education. He had the strong following of his community but framed his politics in terms of larger national issues and aspirations.

I convey my sincere condolences to his family, his friends and his admirers at this irreparable loss,” he said.

Thangal who was state president of Muslim League for three decades passed away last night in Malappuram. He was 73.
