Food markets raided in Lucknow, samples collected

By IANS,

Lucknow : A joint team of the Lucknow police and local administration Tuesday raided prominent food markets of the city and collected over hundred samples of milk, ghee (clarified butter) and khoya (ricotta cheese), after information about sale of spurious and adulterated edible items.

The raids were conducted in the four major markets of Charbagh, Naka, Thakurganj and Kursi Road areas. However, no arrests were made as the shopkeepers, sensing trouble, fled, leaving their products behind.

Over thousands of litres of allegedly spurious milk was also dumped on the roads of the markets.

“What surprised us that when we poured milk from a container on the ground, dense white fumes started coming up. We suspect that a dangerous proportion of some chemical was mixed in the can to prepare duplicate milk,” Superintendent of Police (East) Paresh Pandey told IANS.

The samples have been sent to the laboratory for checking and strict action will be taken against those found involved in selling adulterated items, he added.

The raids were conducted to check supply of adulterated edible commodities a day before the Raksha Bandhan festival.

“We have issued instructions to police across the state to conduct raids to check this menace specially before the festive season,” Additional Director General of Police Brijlal told reporters.
