Ulema Council supporter shot dead, Amir Rashadi escapes narrowly

New Delhi: Ulema Council chief Maulana Amir Rashadi escaped narrowly but one of his party workers accompanying him was killed and several others injured when their vehicles were fired at this afternoon in Phoolpur area of Azamgarh.

The Ulema Council leader along with the party supporters was returning from attending a public meeting in Phoolpur area. The program was part of preparation for a massive agitation by the Ulema Council to be held on August 17 in Azamgarh to protest the NHRC report on the Batla House encounter.

According to Dr Tasleem Rahmani, organizing secretary, Ulema Council, the supporters of BJP MP from Azamgarh Rama Kant Yadav are suspected to be involved in the firing. Soon after the news about firing spread, Ulema Council supporters came on to the streets in the districts and protested, resulting in traffic jams in the entire city.

A Bilariaganj resident Zameerul Hasan told TCN on phone that soon after the incident the Muslim dominated Bilariaganj area became tense and people came out and blocked the roads. He further said that Ulema Council leaders including Maulana Rashadi and General Secretary Maulana Tahir Madani are in the Phoolpur police station demanding arrest of the culprits.
