Haryana minister dies after illness

By IANS,

Chandigarh : Cabinet minister in Haryana, Kartar Devi, died Sunday after a prolonged illness. She was 66.

Devi was admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here since July following multiple complications, including acute asthma, state government officials said.

She was on ventilator support for over 15 days. She passed away in the hospital Sunday.

She was the health minister in Haryana till earlier this month. She held the charge of social justice and some other departments as well.

Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condoled the death of Kartar Devi saying the state had lost a good social crusader and administrator.

Hooda had made her minister without portfolio in July-end following her illness.

On Hooda’s advice, Pahadia had allocated the portfolios of health and medical education, social justice and empowerment, women and child development and welfare of scheduled castes and backward classes, held by Kartar Devi, to the chief minister during her sickness period.

She was the sitting Congress legislator from the Kalanaur (reserved) assembly seat.

The Hooda government completes its normal term March next year. There is speculation that the chief minister could get the assembly dissolved this week for early elections in the state.
