New Delhi: The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre has rejected one of the important recommendations by the Sachar Committee with regards to the protection of Awkaf. The Zakat Foundation of India has regretted the move by the central government.
In a press statement the President of the Zakat Foundation of India Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood said that as per the Wakf Act of 1995 the Chief Executive Officer of the Wakf Boards must have to be a Muslim. Therefore, the Sachar Committee has recommended that in the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission an examination for the cadre of Indian Wakf Services should also be included and those Muslims candidates who qualify these examinations be made Chief Executive Officers of the Wakf Boards.
Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood served as the Officer on Special Duty in the Prime Minister’s Office for the Sachar Committee. Dr Mahmood told that it is the only recommendation that the Central government has rejected. He informed that he has tried to know the reasons behind the rejection of this recommendation through the Right to Information Act. Also he has wanted to know from the government about the alternate of this recommendation.
Dr. Mahmood revealed that to better manage the central wakf board as well as state wakf boards there is a requirement of about two hundred Muslim officers in the group A.
