Bangalore: The Kaiga atomic power plant unit, where drinking water was found contaminated with radioactive element in the last week of November, Thursday resumed power generation after the completion of its routine biennial maintenance work, a top plant official said.
“All the plant systems have been tested and found normal. Unit-1 is expected to be synchronized to the grid by late Thursday,” plant director J.P. Gupta said in a statement.
Over 90 workers of the plant, in Uttara Kannada district about 500 km from here, were found to be affected by contamination after they consumed drinking water mixed with radioactive tritium Nov 24.
The water dispenser was in Unit 1 which had been shut for maintenance since Oct 20.
Central and state intelligence agencies and Karnataka Police are questioning the people who were at plant when the incident took place.
A police complaint has been lodged by the plant authorities without naming any suspect.
