New Delhi : The pain and anguish of the survivors of the Bhopal gas leak “continue to torment us” even 25 years later, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said Thursday.
“It was on this day, 25 years ago that the country witnessed one of the most harrowing manmade tragedies in which thousands of people lost their lives and many were blinded or otherwise physically disabled,” the speaker said in the Lok Sabha as the house expressed solidarity with the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.
“The survivors of the gas tragedy are still suffering from the ill-effects of the gas leaked from the Union Carbide Plant at Bhopal,” she said.
“Let us on this occasion express our solidarity with the victims of this terrible tragedy and reiterate our resolve to make it a better place for the coming generations,” Meira Kumar said.
More than 3,500 people were killed instantly and many thousands have died since the night of Dec 2-3, 1984 when methyl isocyanate gas leaked out from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal.
