Tehran: Tehran Tuesday accused the US of abducting a leading Iranian nuclear scientist who went missing while attending a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in June.
“We have evidence that the Americans had a role in abducting Shahram Amiri and expect the US government to return him,” Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in a televised press conference in Tehran.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told the Mehr news agency earlier Tuesday that Amiri, who worked for the Iranian Atomic Organisation, was likely in a US jail after the Saudis handed him over to the Americans.
Mottaki said Iran believed since Amiri disappeared in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi government would be held responsible and should pursue the case.
