Public suit against central minister seeking probe into assets

By IANS,

Ranchi: A public suit has been filed against union Food Processing Industries Minister Subodh Kant Sahay in the Jharkhand High Court seeking a probe into his assets and demanding a case be filed against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

A Public Interest Litigation was filed Monday by Naval Kishore, a Ranchi resident and social worker in the court. In his PIL, Kishore has demanded that an FIR should be lodged against the minister under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Income Tax (IT) department and Enforcement Directorate (ED) should be directed to probe his assets and investments.

The PIL alleges that Subodh Kant Sahay has purchased a steel plant in Malaysia. It has also charged that his brothers have invested hundreds of crores of Rupees in S.K. Steel company and that Sahay has purchased 200 acres of land. It has also charged that he provided wrong information regarding assets while filing his nomination papers for the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

Reacting to the PIL, Subodh Kant Sahay said: “I am ready to face a probe. The Congress is dedicated to making Jharkhand a corruption free state.”

Sahay, the Lok Sabha MP from Ranchi, is the lone Congress MP from Jharkhand. He was union minister of state for home and information and broadcasting during the Chandrashekhar government at the centre. He became union minister with independent charge for food processing in 2004 and was elevated to cabinet rank in 2009 after the Lok Sabha polls.
