Tiwari goes underground after resignation

By IANS,

New Delhi/Hyderabad : Former Andhra Pradesh governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari, who was forced to resign after allegations of his involvement in a sex romp in Raj Bhawan, has made a quiet exit from Hyderabad, but his final destination was still unknown.

“He left for Delhi Sunday but will not be staying there. He is expected to travel to either Lucknow or Nainital. At this point, he would like to remain incognito,” a Congress party source told IANS.

“After being allegedly caught on tape, he is not likely to make a public appearance or give an explanation very soon.’

Party sources said that Tiwari was initially keen to meet with the leadership to explain his side of the story, but failing to hear from the high command he decided to give up the idea.

On Friday, a local television channel, ABN Andhra Jyothi, ran clips purportedly showing Tiwari caught on camera in a compromising position with three women. The clips ran for about an hour before the Hyderabad High Court restrained the channel from airing the video.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and Chief Secretary Ramakanth Reddy drove to Raj Bhavan to call on Tiwari before he left for the capital.

Sources in Raj Bhavan said there was no formal farewell usually given to an outgoing governor. The media was also not invited for the customary meet.

Tiwari sent his resignation to President Pratibha Patil on Saturday citing health concerns.

A three-time chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Tiwari was appointed as Andhra Pradesh governor in August 2007.

The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the sex scandal involving Tiwari.

Womens’ groups who have been staging protests are demanding that police register a criminal case against him.
