By Falah Al-Fadhli : The incredible Japath Market, located in the heart of the Indian capital, New Delhi, still attracts European tourists and people from all over the world thanks to its reputation for cheap bargains on cotton clothing and trinkets.
Japath Market earned its reputation when Miss World of 1994, Aishwarya Rai, wore one of its gowns, and the market has been crowded with visitors from across the world since then.
New Delhi University student, Anjali Sareen, told KUNA that she was a regular customer at Japath, saying that the market gave her the opportunity to gain good background on market prices, sharpen her negotiating skills with the store owners, whom she said usually doubled their prices.
She said that tourists could find a wide choice of items such as carpets, silk, jewelry, leather and silverware, handicrafts, and hand printed cotton, that were synonymous with India, depending on the quality and the outlet.
Goods and handmade crafts are usually brought from different villages and provinces across India.
Meanwhile, cloth seller Mahendr Singh told KUNA that his goods were sold for a lower price as they were originally allocated for export, and flaws were mended.
As for French tourist Janet Nique, she told KUNA that before coming to New Delhi she had heard about the Japath Market from her friends who have visited the place several years ago, which drove her to list the place as a “must see.” One thing to remember while shopping at Janpath is to bargain as much as you can, as there is no limit to how low you can go with the prices.
There is also a number of small cafes and restaurants there. So, do visit this place, if not for shopping, then, at least to look at the amazing things you can get here, both goods and cuisine.(end) fyf.sab KUNA 011336 Feb 09NNNN
