US Mideast Envoy Talks Gaza Truce

By Prensa Latina,

Amman : The US envoy for the Middle East George Mitchell discussed Saturday consolidation of a long truce in Gaza with the Jordan King Addulah II who demanded from Washington a real commitment in the regional peace process.

Mitchell, recently appointed special envoy to the mideast by US President Barack Obama, was in the Jordan capital finishing a tour that covered Egypt, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Official sources noted the Hashmenita monarch presented to the US visitor, the two states proposals, one Israeli and one Palestinian, to end the dispute that has lasted for more that 60 years and for which there is no sign of an immediate solution.

Both parts urged for a firm agreement to avoid more devastating aggression in Gaza Strip where Israeli bombings killed over 1,300 in 22 days, including 412 children and 110 women, with about 5,300 wounded.

On his tour in the last few hours through the area that excluded Turkey, Obama’s emissary has insisted on showing his visit as proof of active and aggressive commitment of the White House to a long lasting peace in the Middle East, but he warned about delays.

Although Jordan political circles and other Arab nations see a good sign in the new US administration diplomacy here, they told Prensa Latina that they expected for very little immediate progress due to early elections in Israel.
