Markets in a slump around noon

Mumbai : Indian equities markets were in a slump Monday around noon, with a key index ruling 2.18 percent lower than its last closing figure.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 9,363.58 points, 61 points lower than its close of 9,424.24-points Friday.

At noon, the Sensex had fallen further to 9,219.21 points, 2.18 percent or 205.03 points below its previous close.

Similarly, the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was at 2,804.8 points, 2.43 percent down from its last close of 2,874.8.

The BSE midcap index was marginally down, while the BSE smallcap index was 0.07 percent lower than its previous close.

All 13 sectoral indices turned negative, with realty being the most hit, 6.34 percent down than its last close.

There were not many gainers in the 30-share Sensex, with Maruti Suzuki and BHEL being the only stocks gaining at around noon.

Among the losers were DLF, which posted a 71 percent drop in net profts for the quarter ending Dec 31, and Jaiprakash Associates.

In other Asian markets, a key index of the Tokyo stock exchange, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average, was down 1.78 percent to 7,851.66 points.

The Hang Seng, a key index of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, was also trading 2.75 percent lower than its last close.
