Human rights panel orders arrest of nine Uttar Pradesh policemen

Lucknow : The state human rights commission has ordered the arrest of nine Uttar Pradesh policemen for alleged excesses that forced a man to commit suicide in a police lock up in Hardoi district, officials said Friday.

“The nine policemen who are to be arrested are a station house officer, a sub-inspector and seven constables,” additional superintendent of police Govind Agarwal told IANS by phone.

“The human rights commission has also sought a report from us,” added Agarwal.

According to police, Maghai, a resident of Narbha village in Hardoi, committed suicide in the lock up of Pachdevra police station by hanging himself. The incident took place four months ago.
