District chief, provincial council member killed in Afghanistan

KABUL : A district governor and a member of a provincial assembly were killed in fresh incidents of violence in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, police said.
Khan Mohammad, who was member of the Nangarhar provincial council, was shot dead in Darra-e-Noor district on Saturday morning.

The attackers managed to escape in a car after the ambush. No one claimed responsibility. Police spokesman in Nangarhar province Colonel Abdul Ghafoor said investigations had been launched into the incident.

Separately, a district governor was killed in a landmine explosion in the same eastern zone of the country.

Naeem Khan Shirwari, chief of Ghoshta district of Nangarhar province, was on way to his office when his car hit a landmine, said police spokesman Colonel Ghafoor.

One of his guards was killed and another injured in the blast, said the police spokesamn. However, Taliban spokesman Zabeehullah Mujhaid, who claimed responsibility for the blast, said three people, including the district chief, were killed in the attack.
In yet another incident, a senior police officer and a constable were killed in an ambush in Laghman province, also located in the same eastern zone.

Abdul Aziz, a police officer, and his security guard were killed in an attack in Qarghai district of Laghman late on Friday, police said on Saturday. (end) gk.tg KUNA 071254 Feb 09NNNN
