New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh High Court yesterday ordered that encounters should be treated as murders and FIR should be lodged soon after an encounter.
The High Court also ordered that policemen involved in an encounter should be booked and an investigation should be conducted to establish the genuineness of police claims that the encounter was carried out in self defence.
The five judge bench headed by the Chief Justice A R Dave ordered names of the policemen involved in any encounter should be made public.
The bench gave its verdict on a long pending petition filed by some civil rights groups. The petition was in the context of encounters in which naxalities were killed in the state.
The verdict is certain to have far reaching impacts on law and order. It will be seen as blow to government and police who do not come clean on encounters despite agitations and rallies. Batla House encounter is the recent example.
