Many feared dead in suicide attack in Kabul

By IANS,

Kabul : Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the justice ministry and a police station in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul Wednesday, reportedly killing several people, media reports said.

The audacious attacks took place ahead of a visit by Richard Holbrooke, the new US special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s Geo TV quoted a policeman near the justice ministry as saying: “A double suicide attack hit a government office … and left many people dead.”

Justice ministry official Mohammad Ali said at least five gunmen attacked the building in centre of the Afghan capital. Some gunmen were still holed up in the building.

The justice ministry is close to the Presidential Palace.

Police officer Mohammad Salem said another suicide bomber attacked the police at another location.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Tolo, a private TV channel, quoted a Taliban spokesman as saying that seven bombers attacked different government buildings, DPA reported.
