Modi visits Vajpayee at AIIMS

New Delhi : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday evening visited former prime minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is undergoing treatment for chest infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, a statement said Wednesday.

“Modi visited AIIMS and enquired about Vajpayee’s health. He came here late Tuesday evening from Ahmedabad and straightaway went to the AIIMS to enquire about Vajpayee’s health,” the Gujarat government said in an official statement here.

“He met Vajpayee’s daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya and son-in-law Ranjan Bhattachaya in the hospital. Modi has given his best wishes for speedy recovery of Vajpayee,” it said.

Vajpayee was admitted to the hospital Feb 3 with complaints of fever and chest congestion. He is in the intensive care unit (ICU) but his condition is said to be stable.

The chief minister has been in news after his remarks at the BJP’s national executive meeting in Nagpur Sunday when he said that the Nov 26 Mumbai terrorist attack was not possible without “local help”.

Rebuffing him, Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday said: “You should ask Narendra Modi and Pakistan if they are in contact with each other.”

Modi has clarified: “I only meant to say if Pakistan had planned such a big attack, it may well have got some assistance locally. The government should also keep this in mind.”
